Special Projects
KINGS_OF_LEON
On occasion we get special framing projects that really allow us to showcase our creative skills. Over the years we have framed such unusual items as: Persian rugs, archeological artifacts, Japanese Kimonos, a 22k gold plated shovel used in the ground breaking ceremony for a major corporation and many other unusual items that clients see fit to put into frames.
We are currently working with the band KINGS_OF_LEON. The band consist of 3 brothers, Caleb- Followill-lead vocals, rythm guitar/ Matthew Followill-lead guitar/ Jared Followill-bass and their cousin, Nathan Followill, on drums. Recently Jared and Matthew smashed their guitars while on stage. Jared smashed his Gibson Thunderbird at a concert in Sydney, Australia last March and brother Matthew smashed his Epiphone Sheraton at a festival in Leeds, England this summer. Instead of trashing them, they decided they wanted to keep them as mementos framed in their homes.
TURKISH ROBES
A couple brought us some full length antique robes they purchased in Turkey. These were prayer robes which were made for persons of wealth and would be worn for special occasions. One of them had ornamentation on the front and back and the client wanted to see both sides. We therefore had to build a double sided frame. We used a distressed black Italian moulding with an ornate edge, green suede liner and large black inner filet moulding. We duplicated this and sandwiched the robe inside. We made it so that it could be hung on chains and viewed from both sides.
We mounted the purple robe on black velvet surrounded by an very ornate 4″ gold moulding. We added a purple accent strip inside the frame to tie the robe and the frame together.
TIBETAN ART
We regularly frame art from Tibet, both old and modern. Temple wall hangings, known as thangkas, were painted for use in the monasteries and temples and perpetuate the sacred iconography of Tibetan Buddhism. There are many different types of thangkas. Some depict historical figures such as the Dalai Lamas. Some depict Buddhist deities. Others contain elaborate colorful geometrical diagrams known as mandalas. We framed number of old masterpieces for for the Rubin Museum of Asian Art in NYC which were hundreds of years old. It was essential to frame them to the highest museum standards. The tiny thangkas are old works from Mongolia. We used raw silk mats and liners on all pieces.
ROCK & ROLL
Clients have brought us lots of Rock & Roll related items over the years. Posters from events, signed photos of rock icons like Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, The Grateful Dead, album cover art, etc. We’ve worked with some famous rock photographers who took some of the classic rock shots of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s including Kate Simon, Herb Greene, Lisa Law and Baron Walmon. Chuck Level, keyboard player for the Rolling Stones, lives near Macon, Georgia and is one of our clients. He brought us a sketch of Keith Richards with his dog done by band mate, guitarist Ron Wood, who, when he is not touring with the Stones, is painting and showing his work in galleries around the world.
SALVADOR DALI
The Oglethorpe Museum was recently given 14 Salvador Dali lithographs by an anonymous doner. Here is an article from Reporter Newspaper.
I have been the framer for the Museum for many years, having worked with curator Lloyd Nick on many shows. I have been a lifelong fan of Dali since I discovered his work as a teenager, so it was not only an honer to frame these 14 works but very personally satisfying. We decided to give the frames for the the Dalis a contemporary yet very Spanish look. We used a combination of water-guilded gold mouldings and large old style Spanish mouldings. Three of the pieces depicted cards of a Tarot deck that Dali did in the 1980’s. Temperance, The Hanged Man and The Tower. We floated the Tarot prints on black mats to give a very dramatic effect.
